Getting Married and Settling Down in Vietnam: What to Consider

We have met foreigners who have lived in Vietnam for 15 years, even 25, and chosen it as their second home. That kind of commitment makes sense when a place becomes familiar through friendships, family and the routines of an ordinary week.

Vietnam has its own rich cultural diversity, shaped by different ethnic communities and regional traditions. For someone arriving from abroad, finding a place here also means learning how the people around you live, work and relate to one another.

Marriage makes those questions more personal. Where will you live? How will you earn a living? What happens when children, ageing parents or a business opportunity change the plan?

The following five areas are worth discussing before you make commitments that shape the years ahead.

1. Start with the life you want to build

A couple can agree that they love living in Vietnam while imagining very different futures. One may be ready to open a business; the other may expect to move abroad when their children start school. Talk about those expectations early.

Decide where you expect to live. Discuss the next two to five years, including whether Vietnam will be your main home or part of a life across countries. Consider careers, family responsibilities and what would make either partner reconsider.

Connect work and investment plans to everyday life. A new company, a local job and an overseas income each create different demands. Discuss working hours, financial exposure and what happens if one partner's plans take longer than expected. Permission to stay, work authorisation and business ownership have separate requirements.

Build a realistic household budget. Include housing, healthcare, insurance, visits home, support for relatives and an emergency reserve. Keep company and household finances clearly accounted for. Receiving income abroad does not automatically remove Vietnamese tax obligations; our eTax guide for individuals offers a starting point.

Talk openly about children. Do you both want them, and when? Discuss where they would grow up, languages, schooling, childcare and how parenting could affect each person's career. Ask what help from grandparents is realistic. International couples should also check the relevant countries' birth-registration, nationality and passport procedures.

Consider premarital health checks. Particularly if pregnancy is part of the plan, arrange a consultation covering health history, medicines, vaccinations and appropriate screening. A clinician can advise on infections and inherited conditions relevant to your circumstances. These checks can also be useful when children are not immediately planned. They support informed preparation but cannot guarantee fertility or a future child's health.

2. Understand the legal side of marriage in Vietnam

The legal conversation belongs before the wedding. It helps both partners understand the commitments they are making and the documents they will need.

For foreign–Vietnamese couples, confirm the competent commune-level People's Committee and its current registration checklist. Foreign documents may need Vietnamese translations and an Apostille, consular legalisation or an applicable exemption. Our Vietnam Apostille guide explains the authentication routes. A general premarital health check is different from the medical confirmation concerning capacity to understand and control one's actions required for foreign-related marriage registration.

Consider whether a prenup would help. Vietnam recognises agreements establishing the matrimonial property regime. They are optional, but must be completed before legal marriage registration, in writing, with notarisation or authentication. Discuss business interests, overseas assets, debts and family contributions using our prenuptial agreements guide. Mandatory family protections still apply.

Choose the appropriate residence route. Marriage to a Vietnamese citizen can support a TT visa or temporary residence card application, subject to eligibility. TT visas can last up to one year and TT cards up to three years, with validity also limited by the passport. Marriage does not automatically grant residence. Start with our spouse visa and TRC guide, then compare the broader visa options and TRC categories.

Check the employment procedure. A foreigner married to a Vietnamese citizen and living in Vietnam falls within the work-permit exemption. Under the rules applying on 1 November 2026, a separate exemption certificate is not required for this category, but the employer must notify the competent authority at least three working days before work begins.

Get advice before buying property together. Qualifying foreign spouses of Vietnamese citizens living in Vietnam can have housing ownership rights comparable to Vietnamese citizens. Housing ownership and land-use rights still require separate examination. Before a deposit, clarify eligibility, title registration, funding, signatures and future sale arrangements. Our foreign property ownership guide provides an overview.

3. Understand Vietnamese culture and daily life

A disagreement about visiting relatives may actually involve different expectations about family responsibility. A frustrating workplace exchange may reflect an unclear decision process. Understanding the context gives you a better starting point for the conversation.

Get to know the people around you. Families and workplaces differ across regions, generations and personal circumstances. Ask how decisions are made, what people expect and why a particular custom matters. Let what you learn from them shape your understanding of daily life.

Discuss family expectations and boundaries. Talk about Tet, religious practices, support for parents, visits, privacy and spending decisions. Agree what information about your relationship can be shared with relatives. Both partners should have a voice in the life they are building.

Learn how your workplace functions. Ask how colleagues prefer to give feedback, approve decisions and resolve misunderstandings. If you run a business, explain expectations clearly and document responsibilities. Our employment contracts guide covers the formal arrangements alongside those daily working relationships.

Handle conflict with care. Discuss one concern at a time, explain its effect on you and check that you understand the response. This matters when communicating in a shared second language. Avoid insults and threats. If either person becomes overwhelmed, pause and agree when to resume. Recurring difficulties may benefit from a qualified couples counsellor.

Learning some Vietnamese and joining local activities can make participation easier. Integration grows through ordinary interactions, with both partners making room for each other's habits and values.

4. Build a daily life that works in Vietnam

A good-looking apartment is only one part of a workable home. Imagine the same address during a busy Monday, a hospital visit or a week when your usual family support is unavailable.

Choose the area around your actual routine. Test commutes and check noise, drainage, schools, childcare and access to relatives. Our guides to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang can help you compare locations.

Make the home arrangements clear. Check the landlord, lease, deposit, maintenance responsibilities and termination terms. Confirm who will make the foreign resident's required accommodation declaration, even if you are married or hold a TRC. Our renting in Vietnam guide explains what to review.

Check access to work and support. Consider realistic employment opportunities, journeys to clients, reliable internet and the cost of running your business. Build friendships and professional contacts of your own so daily life does not depend entirely on your partner.

Plan healthcare and insurance together. Identify suitable providers, language support and payment arrangements using our hospital guide for foreigners. Review employer-provided cover and any private policy for hospital networks, direct billing, deductibles, exclusions and evacuation benefits. Check maternity waiting periods before trying for a baby and confirm how pre-existing conditions are treated.

5. Stay updated on laws and policies in Vietnam

Settling down is an ongoing process. A new job, a child, a property purchase or a changed rule can affect arrangements that previously worked well.

Check when a rule takes effect. Publication and commencement dates may differ. For example, Decree 393/2026/ND-CP takes effect on 5 December 2026. Anyone planning employment around that date should check the applicable procedure and transitional arrangements. Our work-permit exemptions article explains the upcoming rules.

Use reliable information and current procedures. Our government portals guide shows where to verify updates. Keep a calendar for passports, immigration documents, insurance renewals and tax deadlines.

Look for useful options as circumstances change. Staying informed can help you identify a more suitable residence route, use available digital services and understand benefits for which you may qualify. Verify eligibility before relying on an incentive or committing money.

Vietnam can become a lasting home. Giving these conversations enough attention helps you build that life with clearer expectations and fewer avoidable surprises.
