Moving to Vietnam Checklist 2026: Your First 30 Days as an Expat

Moving to Vietnam becomes real through small tasks. You may arrive with a suitcase and two weeks in a serviced apartment, but still need a dependable phone number, a way to pay locally, clarity about immigration and work paperwork, and somewhere to seek medical care.

None of these tasks exists in isolation. Your address may affect administrative follow-up. Your phone number may be needed by a bank, employer or government platform. Your immigration status may affect whether you can work, open a particular banking product or complete another procedure.

This moving to Vietnam checklist gives you a practical sequence for the first 30 days. It is a planning guide, not a promise that every application will be approved or completed within one month.

Your first month in Vietnam at a glance

These are planning windows. Do not delay urgent medical care, temporary residence reporting or any authorization required before you begin work.

Which route are you following?

1. Before you arrive: prepare documents and backups

The easiest first week begins before the flight. Confirm which entry route matches your planned activities, permitted stay and sponsor duties. A visa, residence document and work authorization are related but not interchangeable. Start with the EasyTiger Vietnam visa guide.

Ask your employer, sponsor, bank, school or adviser for a case-specific list. Bring your passport and entry approval, adding qualifications, employment, family, school or health records only when required.

Overseas documents may need an Apostille, another authentication route, Vietnamese translation or certification. Vietnam's Apostille Convention arrangements took effect on 11 September 2026, but do not cover every document or country relationship. Book initial accommodation that can report foreign guests, arrange suitable health or travel cover from arrival, and check important exclusions. Keep secure digital copies, accessible emergency funds, at least one backup payment method and the contacts for your sponsor, insurer and accommodation.

2. Your first day: check your stay and residence reporting

After immigration, check the entry stamp and permitted-stay information on your visa, e-visa or other entry document. Save copies and set reminders well before expiry. A pending application is not permission to overstay.

Next, confirm temporary residence reporting. Under current Ministry of Public Security guidance, the accommodation must report electronically as soon as a foreign guest arrives. A paper declaration must reach commune-level police within 12 hours, or 24 hours in remote areas.

Hotels and serviced apartments normally handle this at check-in. In a private home, the host or accommodation manager reports the stay. Provide accurate passport and entry information and ask for confirmation. A new address requires new reporting.

Temporary residence reporting records where you stay. It is not a Temporary Residence Card and does not extend your stay. EasyTiger's residence guide explains the distinction.

Finally, establish immediate connectivity and save your address in Vietnamese, your host's contact details, your insurer's assistance line and Vietnam's emergency numbers: 113 for police, 114 for fire and rescue, and 115 for medical emergencies.

3. Days 2 to 7: choose housing and a dependable phone number

Your serviced apartment may work well for arrival, but the street could be noisier or the commute longer than expected. Where possible, inspect a neighborhood at different times before signing a longer lease.

Before paying a deposit, verify who can legally rent the property. Check rent, deposit, utilities, management fees, repairs, early termination and deposit-return terms. Photograph the property, meters, furniture and keys at handover. Then confirm reporting at the new address.

Treat phone setup as a parallel task. A travel eSIM may cover immediate data, while a dependable local number can support calls, SMS and account verification. Register through an official carrier channel, ensure the subscriber information matches your passport, and check plan validity, top-up and SMS capability. Not every eSIM is data-only, and no number works with every service.

4. During week one: create a payment plan and check banking eligibility

You do not need to solve local banking at the airport. Keep a lawful backup payment method and separate setup costs from normal monthly expenses. Deposits, temporary accommodation and document preparation can make the first month unusually expensive, so include a contingency instead of relying on a universal expat budget.

Ask the chosen bank what it requires for your profile and each product. Accounts, debit cards, mobile banking, QR payments and international transfers may have different conditions.

For example, HSBC Vietnam's current account page says a foreign resident may apply with a passport and valid entry visa or equivalent document, subject to biometric verification. Submitted documents need at least 60 days of validity. Yet its debit-card criteria also require at least 12 months of current residence validity. Do not generalize one bank's product rules across the market.

If employed, confirm how salary will be paid and retain relevant transfer and source-of-funds records. The goal is either a usable local banking setup or a clear list of missing requirements.

5. Week two: progress the paperwork that applies to you

This is where the route comparison matters.

Employees should follow up with HR on the work permit or exemption process, lawful start date, contract, payroll, personal income tax and applicable social insurance. Under Decree 219/2025/ND-CP, most foreign workers need authorization before working, although defined exemptions and notification procedures exist. Preparation often starts before travel. Founders and investors should keep two tracks visible. Company incorporation, ownership, capital and business banking do not automatically settle personal permission to stay or work.

Dependents should coordinate sponsorship, relationship documents and renewals with the main sponsor. Work plans need a separate assessment. Remote workers should review their actual arrangement instead of assuming that a foreign employer, foreign salary or tourist status resolves immigration, work and tax questions.

Start keeping arrival and departure dates, contracts and income records for later tax-residency analysis. Do not wait until annual filing season to reconstruct them.

From 28 September 2026, Decree 320/2026/ND-CP allows a foreigner who entered or resides in Vietnam lawfully to request a personal electronic identification account without first holding a residence card. Registration, validity and access to services still depend on the current procedure and lawful stay. A personal account is separate from a company's electronic identity account. Give every pending task an owner, a next action and a follow-up date.

6. Weeks two and three: build healthcare and everyday routines

Review how arrival insurance, employer benefits and any longer-term policy connect. Foreign residents do not all enter the same public or employer-sponsored coverage. Confirm eligibility, waiting periods, exclusions, hospital networks, language support, direct billing and reimbursement documents.

Identify a nearby clinic or hospital before you need one. If you take regular medication, arrange continuity through an appropriate clinician and check lawful availability rather than travelling with an uncertain supply.

Make daily life sustainable. Test your commute, set up household services and learn safe routes. Renting a motorbike does not prove that you are legally licensed or insured to ride it. For families, school and childcare research may need to begin well before arrival. During this stage, confirm transport, medical contacts, pickup permissions and any records the provider still needs.

7. Week four: review your setup and plan the next 60 days

By day 30, you may still be waiting for a permit, bank product or residence document. That is normal. The useful outcome is visibility, not the fiction that every process finishes within one month.

Review passport, visa, residence and permit expiry dates. Add renewal reminders and upcoming appointments. Confirm that address or contact changes have reached the relevant sponsor, employer, bank, insurer and service providers where required. Compare actual spending with your arrival budget, organize payment and application records, and escalate any task that could affect your lawful stay or right to work.
